History of Portland Lions Club
The Lions Club of Portland was officially chartered on 25th
February 1967 under the sponsorship of the Lions Club of Warrnambool, with Lion Len Mibus as Charter President.
Commencing with a membership of 38 the numbers reached a high of 75
in 1981/1982 and a low as 35 in 1996/1997. The club’s current membership is 43 members with 6 female members and 37
male members.
During the 30 years between 1967 and 1997 Club members raised $436,468
for charities and put in 38,092 man hours working for their Community. In the 10 years since the figures have been approximately
$30,000 per year in fundraising and an average of 1,000 man hours per year from members.
Over the 40 years the Club has hosted 3 District Conventions with
the latest being in 1997 when over 700 conventioneers came to Portland to celebrate 50 years of Lions in Australia.
This was and still is the largest attendance at a V2 Convention since V2 was formed 32 years ago.
From providing a bus to Kyeema Ability Centre in the Club’s
first year of operation to, establishing a Native Fauna Park, bottle drives, broken glass drives, blood screening, Miss Australia
Quest, assistance to Lewis Court residents, Antique Auctions, Trade Fairs, numerous BBQ’s, and the slaughter and
distribution of some 500 sheep to less fortunate people in the community during 1990/1991, the Portland Lions Club has been
and remains a major force in providing service to the Community of Portland and also Nationally and Internationally.
